Guatemala - 'the heart of an ancient empire still beats'
Guatemala is Central America epitomised. It has the region’s highest volcanoes, its most unexplored jungles, some of the greatest ruins and a population that is, almost in half, descended from the Mayan people. Ancient traditions are alive and well here and the relative upstart religion of the Spanish conquistadors has, in many cases, done little more than cover the pillars of Mayan belief with a thin coating, like moss on a jungle tree.

The majority of travellers tend to gravitate to the ancient capital of Antigua, with its language schools and spectacular necklace of volcanoes. Mount an expedition - and any long-distance trip in Guatemala can end up feeling like an ‘expedition’ - into the jungles of Petén and you have the feeling that you are discovering new worlds yourself.

Profile:

Area: 108,890 sq km
Population: 12 million
Population density: 110 people / sq km
Languages: 60% Spanish, 40% Amerindian languages
Conversation stopper: Stories abound of mysterious black cats in the jungles of Petén. It seems that a pair of panthers escaped from a touring zoo several years ago and their offspring have since thrived by raiding local hencoops.
