Malawi - 'the warm heart of Africa'
Even in an age when few patches of Livingstone’s ‘dark continent’ remain unexplored, an adventurous heart cannot fail to beat faster at the thought of a trip to Malawi. Drive the 300 miles down the shore of Lake Malawi, without ever sighting land on the opposite (Mozambican) side, and you quickly grasp why this is described as an ‘inland sea’ rather than a mere lake.

Malawi’s tourism office bill their country as ‘the warm heart of Africa.’ It would be impossible to travel through this fascinating little country without building up a real fondness for the people of Malawi.

Profile:

Area: 118,480 sq km
Population: 13 million
Population density: 109 people / sq km
Languages: English is widely spoken but Chichewa is the official language. Even in this little country (of which almost a third is water) there are many regional languages: Chinyanja, Chiyao, Chitumbuka, Chisena, Chilomwe, Chitonga…
Conversation stopper: It was in Malawi that David Livingstone almost became the only explorer in history to be killed by shampoo. When locals saw him lathering his head in the lake they flew into a frenzy at the assumption that he was a witch taking out his brains.
