Malaysia - 'Truly Asia'
It is instantly obvious that Malaysia is richer, more developed and better organised than its regional peers. The tourism catchphrase is ‘Malaysia: Truly Asia’ and it is fair to say that the country offers a very trouble-free way of sampling the region’s cultural and geographical diversity. Most people combine a visit to Malaysia with a brief jaunt into the bright lights of Singapore.

Highlights include trekking in Taman Negara Park or Cameron Highlands; colonial history of Melaka and Penang; diving in Perhentian Islands or beaching on Langkawi; KL’s vibrant architecture and nightlife. In Borneo, Mount Kinabalu (Sabah) could be described, quite literally, as a ‘highpoint’ of any trip to SE Asia as could the Iban longhouse communities of Sarawak.

Profile:

Area: 329,750 sq km
Population: 24 million
Population density: 73 people / sq km
Languages: The official language is Malay but English and Chinese (most varieties) are also common. Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Panjabi, Thai and, in Borneo, Iban are also widely spoken.
Conversation stopper: The bar at the old Coliseum Hotel in KL is officially recognised as the highest in SE Asia: the colonial designers deliberately built it at what they established as ‘the average height of an Englishman’s elbow.’
