Mauritania - 'the desert frontier'
Not the place for the agoraphobic. The light and space of Mauritania can be intense. The fact that there are less than three people per square kilometre of Mauritanian soil should give you an idea of just how much space there is in this huge West African country.

The Atlantic coast offers countless miles of truly empty beach – enough to make a joke of most tourism department claims of ‘deserted beaches’ - and the interior is an awe-inspiring landscape of dunes and rocky scrub inhabited by little but hardy camel-herding nomads and a few scrawny jackals. This is desert wilderness at its most challenging but it is infinitely worth the time and effort and a few nights sleeping out under a billion Saharan stars (hundreds of miles from the nearest streetlights) will remain as one of the most unforgettable travelling experiences you will ever have.
