Oman - 'Hidden treasure of the Gulf'
In 1970 there were just 5 miles of tarmac in the entire country and visas to visit Oman were almost impossible to get (they were vetted by the Sultan himself). Oman’s oil will not last forever and it begins to look like the unspoilt wilderness that was hidden from the outside world for so long will turn out to be the great natural resource of the future.   The country has more than 1,000 miles of coastline, boasting white beaches and turquoise reefs and there are thousands of square miles of classic sand desert.

Oman is already earning a reputation as one of the world’s great unsung wilderness destinations and increasing numbers of travellers are returning – from what the uninformed often consider to be a risky region – with tales of the incomparable friendliness and hospitality of the Omani people.

Profile:

Area: 212,460 sq km
Population: 3 million
Population density: 14 people / sq km
Languages: The official language is Arabic and as English is only spoken in the tourist centres a good guide (or an excellent phrasebook) can be invaluable.
Conversation stopper: Under the rule of the previous Sultan many of the trappings of ‘decadent western life’ were banned from the country. Until 1970 it was, for example, illegal to wear sunglasses.
