Portugal - 'The Ancient Mariner'
During the 'Age of Discoveries' Portugal saw itself as the very centre of the world. It was from here that fearless explorers and mighty armadas sailed out towards unknown horizons.
It can often be hard to imagine the Portuguese drive to conquer the world in the peaceful, seemingly inward-looking Portugal of today. Although the beach attractions of the Algarve are well-known and Lisbon is increasingly attracting 'city-break' tourists, the country is often overlooked by travellers. Seemingly out on a limb and almost standoffish, Portugal still seems to have its back to Europe and its face staring wistfully towards the new world.

Yet, even today, this most western of European countries retains a character and a charm all of its own and few who take time to get to know Portugal can fail to fall in love with it.
