Senegal - 'Go West!'
Senegal has been a well-kept French secret for many years but now the rest of the world are becoming 'au fait' with the attractions of this lovely West African country. Between the bustling and suave Dakar and the lovely chic and peaceful northern town of St Louis (famous for its jazz festival) there are 200 kms of pristine beaches. South of the capital, riverine forests and coastal marshes are home to spectacular birdlife.

While the country's national parks - like Oiseaux de Djoudj (at times home to 3 million migrating birds) and the huge Niokolo Koba - might not compete with the animal concentrations of East Africa, you can often find spectacular wildlife here...and you are guaranteed to be far from the circuit of the zebra-striped tour-buses!

Profile:

Area: 196,190 sq km
Population: 12 million
Population density: 61 people / sq km
Languages: French is the official language but Wolof, Pulaar, Jola and Mandinka are widely spoken.
Conversation stopper: There is a tradition in some remote villages that foreigners should be avoided at all costs. Some believed that these diabolical outsiders had the power to shrink a man's penis.
