Tanzania - 'Africa at its wildest'
Tanzania has a way of living up to all those romantic, pre-conceived African images in a way that no other country can. This, after all, is the location of the Serengeti and the incredible 'lost world' of Ngorongoro Crater. Tanzania is also the sparkling beaches of the Indian Ocean, the tangled alleyways of Zanzibar, the bustling portside market of Dar es Salaam and, of course, the shining ice-covered peak of Kilimanjaro, the world's most spectacular mountain.

The Serengeti is simply one of the most astounding wilderness areas on earth. The endless expanses of rolling savanna and the amassing herds (an estimated 4 million wildebeest) seem to epitomise the incredible power of the African landscape.

Profile:

Area: 945,087 sq km
Population: 37.4 million
Population density: 39 people / sq km
Languages: The official language is Swahili but English is almost universally spoken.
Conversation stopper: Under Tanzania's first socialist government it was decreed that passengers who flew First Class on the national airline should get LESS legroom than those in economy class.
