Thailand - 'land of sixty million smiles'
The Thai people in general might be the friendliest to be found anywhere in the world. Whether in the Khao San 'backpacker ghetto' of Bangkok, on the islands or among the hill tribes of the far north you are unlikely to meet with anything but smiles and hospitality. Despite a huge tourism industry, Thailand remains one of the most utterly stress-free places in the world in which to travel.

Profile:

Area: 514,000 sq km
Population: 64.6 million
Population density: 125 people / sq km
Languages: Thai is the official language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas but some basic marketplace Thai (or a good phrasebook) are almost a necessity if you want to get away from Bangkok and the islands.
Conversation stopper: Thailand's Kanchana Ketkaew broke one of the strangest world records in 2002 by living with 3,000 scorpions for 32 days.
